A Country Bumpkin

The ever-so-lovely people at Joules got in contact with me weeks ago, as they wanted to send me something. After much deliberation (“ooh pink wellies! ooh pretty bed covers! ooh baby stuff!”) I settled on the Moredale Quilted Jacket in ‘evergreen’*. I was still amidst my Eternal Struggle™ (dramatic, much?) for the perfect winter coat and it seemed like the perfect solution! I started using it right away (I don’t do half-arsed reviews, innit) and planned on taking an outfit photo later, but since then, I’ve misplaced my tripod, spent my time looking after my ill husband / myself / son, the clocks have changed and things around here are dark. Dark dark dark. And short, dull days mean no time for outfit photos, in this house— booo!

How pretty is this floral lining?!

I love these little details
A little fox for all you fox-lovers!
Big roomy pockets!

And finally, an iPhone snap of me in my new jacket, just ‘cos:
Imagine. Two of me. Whoah.

Joules isn’t a brand I was particularly familiar with previously, but I’ve since learnt that it’s the child of Tom Joule— a man who followed in his dad’s footsteps and started to sell clothing to country people at equestrian events, over 30 years ago. He saw that country folk were colourful, but it wasn’t reflected in their clothing, so he went ahead and made bright pink wellies and Joules are still passionate about colour, detail and prints to this day.

And I must say, I feel like a right country bumpkin in this jacket! All I need are some new wellies, a dog to walk and a trip to the local country park. I love that it’s lightweight (not too thick and heavy for car journeys or battling with a baby) but it’s still really warm and allows for more layers underneath. It has a lovely bright lining and zip, a nice collar that’ll allow for a scarf to sit comfortably when it gets colder and big roomy pockets that are big enough for my phone, cards and keys (and a muslin for mopping up snot / milk / dribble on-the-go) meaning I don’t have to take a bag if I’ve got Byron in the pushchair. Always a plus! There really isn’t anything bad to say about this coat. It comes in an array of colours and there’s even the Marcotte which is very similar but with a hood!

The Moredale Quilted Jacket is available from Joules for £89.95.

Too Cute To Spook

I never usually make big plans for Halloween and this year was no exception, as it basically bypassed us completely— we had no fancy dress parties to get ready for, no trick or treaters at our door (the perks of living in a flat!) and we didn’t even buy a pumpkin! Pumpkin-carving is one of those things that sounds like fun, but when it actually comes to doing it, it’s difficult, time-consuming and it smells. Oh, the smell! (I can’t be the only one that doesn’t like the smell of a pumpkins innards, can I?)

That said, I can’t wait to carve them with Byron, in a few years! But for now he is still a little big lump, who doesn’t know what’s going on from one day to the next! The closest we got to celebrating this year, was dressing him up in this cute costume, that my mum couldn’t resist. Count Byracula!

I now want to dress him in bow ties & waistcoats all the time.

Halloween will start to be a little more fun from next year, when he can appreciate carved pumpkins and Ghostbusters, and he can go trick-or-treating at our friends and families houses! I don’t really like the idea of trick-or-treating elsewhere. Not only because we’re forever telling children not to talk to strangers or take sweets from them, then completely contradicting ourselves, but because I think it’s a bit… cheap. And kind of like begging. (Not to mention dangerous. Kids were given cocaine!) I’d much rather have a halloween party!

Life Through The Lens • An Autumn Walk

When it’s dry (and even better, sunnier) it seems there are plenty of things to do outside, but when it’s cold, damp and grey I find myself searching for reasons to leave our cosy, little home. I think I’ve exhausted all of our local coffee shops and shopping centres, for a little while! We’ll be going to rhyme-time at the library soon, but Byron’s still got a cough and I don’t want him to pass it to any other children.

Tuesday was cold and misty, but dry so I took Byron for a walk at our local country park. I think it’ll become a firm favourite next summer! I love that a few miles in one direction, there’s this abundance of trees and woodland around a massive lake and in the other, I’m on the motorway. We’ve definitely got the best of both worlds!

The Week In Notes • #004

001. Autumn, I’m feeling you now. I was a bit miffed when you reared your ugly head, when we’d had such a poor excuse for a summer, but now I can get down with mugs of hot chocolate, new knitwear & nightwear, sunny skies and crunchy leaves. You’re a season I forget about and as it turns out, I actually quite like you. I bought a couple of pairs of new fleecy pyjama bottoms from Primark yesterday and I want to hibernate in them. They are so comfy! I don’t want to get dressed now, unless I absolutely have to go out. And even then, I’m pondering how necessary trousers and jeans are, when you have pyjama bottoms of fleecy, warm, cosy goodness. Not very, I reckon.

002. Life has been full of catch-ups with old friends over coffee, job-hunting, trying to clear my inbox, family get-togethers, watching B roll over & over & over and dinner dates with my pals— it’s good to be busy! I’ve been struggling with finding things to do with Byron when it’s raining though. There are only so many things that are cheap or free and also inside. I find myself roaming around shopping centres and I have no self-restraint! (And now, no money.)

003. Is it acceptable to start getting excited about Christmas yet? ‘Cos I am. Having a tight budget this year, means I’m already mentally planning gifts, not to mention the fact that it’s Byron’s first Christmas, which is very exciting in itself! I’m aiming to get all my Christmas shopping done before mid-November. Watch this space! (And wish me luck.)
