There’s a woman I know who constantly rubs everyone up the wrong way. You know the type— she believes she is the Queen, looks down on everyone, and every other word is ‘darling’. Every argument she has comes back to her education and upbringing, and she tries to belittle everyone else.

One thing she really hates is swearing. Cursing. Expletives. Whatever it is you like to call it! She is not a fan. She claims that if you swear, you’re showing that you don’t know how to express yourself and you haven’t been educated appropriately. So is this true?

In short, no. I’ve got news for you lady— times are a’ changin’! I’ve had a fantastic education, received good grades & have a wide vocabulary, but sometimes, “Oh no” or “Please go away” just doesn’t cut it. They say, “It’s not big & it’s not clever”, but actually I think it is really clever to be able to just use one word that has so much venom, passion and aggression to display your feelings, don’t you?! I think it conveys what you mean, pretty clearly! Maybe it’s not always appropriate for every other word to be ‘fuck’ or to direct it to someone personally, but I think swear words are a great use of the English language.

Rob Brydon: When I was small and my dad just happened to hit his finger with a hammer for something new, he used to say, ‘Hells bells and buckets of blood.’
Stephen Fry: That’s a good saying ‘Hells bells and buckets of blood.’ I usually just say “Fuck it!”

If it’s good enough for Fry, it’s good enough for me!

I don’t swear often and I prefer it this way because then when I do swear in anger people really know that I’m angry! Haha. I think it all depends on context and situation. I do hate it when I hear people swearing to kids, but swearing when something goes wrong just cannot be helped!

Exactly – if it’s not every other word, then when you DO use it, people know exactly how you feel!

Hmmm, interesting! I think I’m just like Helen – I rarely swear, but when I do, people know I’m *seriously* mad!

According to the One Show the other day, swearing is a kind of pain relief, which is why you can’t help but swear when you stub your toe!!
I used to swear a lot when I was hanging out with a certain band!!!

Hahaha.. this reminded me of an old Smack the Pony skit that was like an Emergency 999 public service announcement. “They’re all around us, they work at our offices and raise our children… they’re people who don’t swear!” and a montage of people falling over, dropping things, and saying, “Oh, fiddlesticks!”

Like anything other words, expletives are most effective when used sparingly. Some of my boyfriend’s friends swear as a hesitation “I was at uhh… fuckin… McDonalds the other day and…” I’m sure the Queen Mum would have disapproved of “damn” in her day. It’s all relative!

I don’t often swear (except when I stub my toe or I’m really really angry!) I think the words have more impact if every other word you say isn’t a curse word. I don’t have a problem with swearing, although a lot of people tend to apologise if they swear in front of me – I think they think because I don’t swear I must be offended by it!

I wish I would swear less. Our ethics teacher told us that swearing is the sign of utter powerlessness, and I agree. I think I started swearing because people thought I was a goodie-goodie and were always apologizing when they swore in front of me, so I just got irritated by that and started swearing myself. I know it’s a lousy excuse and a stupid reason, so I’m trying to stop.

I completely agree that swearing should not be every other word, it’s just not attractive and it’s a bit annoying, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using swear words occasionally and when you really mean them.

I also believe there is a time and a place for it. To some people it is offensive and unpleasant and I think people should realise and respect that.

Thank you for raising this issue i have been pondering over it for a while now.

Very much enjoying your blog :)
